Central Station: Recycling, Hazardous Materials, Reuse, & Administration Regional Recycling CenterThe Central Station accepts most of the materials collected at the rural stations, but also provides additional recycling options.
Accepted items: Aluminum and steel cans, clean scrap metal, white, mixed paper, wrapping paper, junkmail, magazines and catalogs, paper sacks, phone books, newspaper, cardboard/paperboard, plastics (1-7), clear, brown, blue, and green glass bottles and jars, clean plastic sacks, shredded paper, CDs, DVDs, audio cassettes and cases, 8 track tapes, VHS tapes, books (paperback & hardcover), and styrofoam packing peanuts (boxed or bagged). Non-Accepted items: No block styrofoam.  Hours of OperationHazardous Materials FacilityAccepted items: Freon appliances, paint* , gasoline , batteries, fertilizers, cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, medications, fluorescent lamps and much more. Drop-off services are free for households only; businesses must pay a fee. Be careful when handling hazardous wastes.

Click here for more information on Hazardous Materials ) Non-Accepted items: asbestos, radioactive materials or explosives (fireworks, ammunition, flares, black powder) Remember, if you need to pick up some house paint, cleaning supplies, automobile fluids, or lawn & garden chemicals, you may do so while you're here, depending on availability. Hours of OperationFreon Appliance RecyclingFreon appliance recycling is available for items such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. Bring your appliance to the Hazardous Materials Facility at 3400 South Walnut Street. The appliances are then picked up by a company who safely recovers the Freon and recycles the unit. When Freon containing appliances are disposed of properly, it keeps our environment healthy by keeping chemical contaminants out of our air, soil, and water. Reuse CenterEFFECTIVE January 19, 2010 the REUSE SIDEWALK at Central Recycling & Reuse will be open from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays for dropoff and pickup of reuse items.
The Reuse Center welcomes your participation in diverting reusable materials from the waste stream and by allowing them to be reused. Our Reuse Center is stocked with an ever changing supply of materials for your next art, education, or community project. Materials are free and available on a first come first serve basis. The Materials for the Arts Center is designed to serve non-profits, churches, schools, and artists working on community projects. If you fit this description, please bring a letter of verification on letterhead to the Material for the Arts Center for us to put on file. The Materials for the Arts Center is open every Thursday from 8:00am - 4:30pm, and by appointment. Call 24 hours in advance and speak to Mary Baker Hunter for an appointment. There is usually a wide array of items to choose from. You can find items such as paper and cardboard boxes; all shapes, sizes, and colors of plastic containers; craft, household, toys, and much more. We also accept donations. If your group is working on a specific project, we may be able to accommodate a wish list for your project. Non-profits, churches, and schools that are not within Monroe County may make arrangements to "trade" services by calling 812-349-2022. There are occasions where groups and reuse centers can trade materials or come and shop for a donation. Give your shoes a new pair of feet! Drop of your old shoes that are in reuseable condition. Clothing and accessories are also accepted. The Sidewalk is a place to exchange useful household goods, too. The Sidewalk Exchange is available for all residents of Monroe County. It is designed to take and leave usable household items. We ask that residents follow some rules of courtesy as the program is designed for all to share. We also ask that residents who take items do not use them for resale purposes. Please only shop once a week and limit the number of items that you take in one trip. Accepted items are small electronic items that do not require a recycling fee (microwaves, toaster ovens, radios, and fans), clothing, housewares, books, magazines, kitchenware, tools, gardening supplies, clothing, shoes, etc. Large items are sometimes accepted, please ask for assistance or call ahead. Non-accepted items: Large bulky items, mattresses, toilets, construction materials, doors, windows, televisions, computers, large electronic devices, non-working items, paint, underwear, tires or trash. ...All for free!
